How Precise Irrigation Works

Four inputs. One clear answer.

Fyllo combines the four things that actually determine whether your crop needs water right now.

Approximately 95% to 97% of the water applied to a crop is lost through transpiration — and only 3% to 5% is used by the plants. Precision irrigation is about putting the water in the right place at the right time.
01
🌱

Finding the active root zone

Before anything else, Fyllo determines exactly which soil depth your crop's active feeder roots occupy — using a moisture depleting technique specific to each plot.

02
💧

Real-time soil moisture at root depth

Nero Infinity continuously measures moisture at the active root zone using SWR technology. When moisture drops to the crop's stage-specific threshold — the irrigation alert triggers.

03
🌾

Crop stage, variety & soil type

Water demand changes significantly across growth stages — and varies by crop variety and soil type. Fyllo's models encode stage-wise requirements calibrated to your specific crop and soil.

04
🌦️

Evapotranspiration & weather

How much water the crop loses to the atmosphere changes daily. Fyllo calculates evapotranspiration from DeepMet's live weather data — adjusting irrigation timing accordingly.

Why It Matters

Most farmers over-irrigate. Here's what that costs.

💸 Wasted money on every irrigation

Each unnecessary irrigation wastes electricity or diesel for the pump, fertilizer that leaches away with excess water, and time.

🌱 Roots suffer in waterlogged soil

Overwatered soil lacks oxygen at root level. Roots grow shallow and weak — making the crop more vulnerable to disease and stress.

🦠 Diseases thrive in wet conditions

Excess moisture creates ideal conditions for fungal diseases. Over-irrigation is one of the leading causes of preventable disease.

🌍 Water is running out

India's groundwater levels are falling rapidly. Farmers who waste water today face water scarcity tomorrow.

In Depth

How does Fyllo's precision irrigation actually work?

How does Fyllo determine the precise irrigation schedule for a farm?

Fyllo calculates irrigation need by combining three inputs specific to each farm: soil moisture at the active feeder root zone depth, the crop variety's stage-specific water requirement, and evapotranspiration calculated from live weather data.

The starting point is finding the right depth. Fyllo uses a moisture depleting technique to identify the precise depth of the active root zone. From there, stage-wise water requirements are applied. Finally, evapotranspiration is calculated daily from DeepMet's live data.

33%
Average reduction in water usage across Fyllo farms.

Individual farmers have reported 30–40% water savings — with one grape grower reducing from 15 to 16 irrigations to 10 irrigations in fruiting season.

Does precision irrigation work with existing drip or sprinkler systems?

Yes. Fyllo's advisory works with any existing irrigation infrastructure — drip, sprinkler, flood, furrow, or manual. Fyllo tells you when to irrigate and for how long; your existing system delivers the water.

What does this look like in practice — a real farm example

In grape farms in Maharashtra and Karnataka, Fyllo farmers irrigate with 28 lac litres per acre per season — compared to 42 lac litres without Fyllo. That's 14 lac litres saved per acre, per year.

Over five seasons, Fyllo grape farms show 70% less bicarbonate accumulation, 55% less TDS build-up, and 8× less soil pH drift compared to farms using fixed irrigation schedules.

FAQ

Questions about precise irrigation

A soil moisture meter tells you the current level — but doesn't tell you if it's adequate for your specific crop at its current stage, or whether it will be adequate tomorrow given the weather. Fyllo combines the reading with crop-specific thresholds, growth stage, and weather to give the action: irrigate or wait.

Yes. Fyllo measures actual soil moisture rather than estimating from soil type, making it accurate regardless of composition. Calibrated across all Indian soil types.

Each device covers one plot. Farms with multiple plots use multiple devices — each giving independent advice. 80% of Fyllo farmers have purchased additional devices.

Yes. Dharti explains any recommendation in your language — current soil moisture, the threshold your crop requires, and how weather is influencing the recommendation.
